Controls Engineer

Ballard’s Operational Technology Group under the Advanced Manufacturing department has an immediate full-time opportunity available for a Controls Engineer to join the team. This position will be located at our Burnaby facility. The successful candidate will be accountable for the integrity, reliability, and operability of all automation and control designs within Operations and Advanced Manufacturing. This position will advise on automation and control matters to ensure safe, reliable & efficient operations as well as ensure all work complies to industry codes and standards.

Ballard’s Operational Technology Group under the Advanced Manufacturing department has an immediate full-time opportunity available for a Controls Engineer to join the team. This position will be located at our Burnaby facility. The successful candidate will be accountable for the integrity, reliability, and operability of all automation and control designs within Operations and Advanced Manufacturing. This position will advise on automation and control matters to ensure safe, reliable & efficient operations as well as ensure all work complies to industry codes and standards.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Dedicated specialist for specifying and setting guidance for new and existing automated manufacturing equipment
  • Work closely with process owners and outside system integrators to connect automated equipment to a Manufacturing Execution System (MES)
  • Upgrading various legacy control systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Omron) to extend their service life
  • Design and programming of control strategies in the control system(s)
  • Set up and configure communication networks but not limited to device net, Ethernet and remote I/O
  • Debug/Troubleshoot the peripheral device programming and machine PLC programming
  • Select, test and integrate hardware and software components such as robots, analog devices, motion controllers, and sensors
  • Participate in start-up and commissioning. Train local manufacturing personnel on system use. Train maintenance personnel on controls implementation in order to provide adequate tier 1 and 2 support
  • Provide on-site tier 3 engineering support and service of installed systems
  • Establish and administrate modern change management software/process specifically designed for industrial automation
  • Develop and maintain standardized controls documentation requirements (Controls System Schematics, loop drawing, JB layouts, panel design, wiring, etc.)


Requirements:

  • A post-secondary engineering degree, diploma or equivalent; specializing in electrical or mechatronics
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience programming in a PLC environment (Allen-Bradley and Siemens) preferably on factory automation equipment
  • Familiarity and experience with ISA-88 standards
  • Detail-orientated; able to identify and troubleshoot problems with industrial machinery independently
  • Strong programming, mechanical and electrical problem-solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills


The following would be an asset:

  • Working knowledge of Invensys Wonderware System Platform and ArchestrA
  • Knowledge in Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)
  • Some knowledge of and/or experience with MRP/ERP systems (Oracle preferred)
  • Some knowledge of and/or experience with network infrastructure and IoT connectivity
